Alejo, Measure C get thumbs-up

Posted: Friday, Sep 5th, 2008

The Pajaro Valley Cesar Chavez Democratic Club announced its endorsements for several positions and a phone tax measure after hearing candidates speak at its forum Thursday night.

The PVCCDC forum took place in the meeting room of the Service Employees International Union office in Watsonville. About 30 people gathered in the room to hear candidates from the Pajaro Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees, as well as the Santa Cruz and Watsonville city councils.

The audience also heard arguments for and against Measure C. If accepted by voters, the measure would add a phone tax on city residents’ phone bills to pay for emergency services.

For the PVUSD board, the PVCCDC voted to endorse Karen Osmundson, Lupe Rivas and Sandra Nichols.

They threw their support behind Watsonville City Council candidates Manuel Bersámin and Luis Alejo, and on the Santa Cruz council, they supported Tony Madrigal and Ryan Coonerty, both incumbents.

The club also said it would support Measure C.

Of the six PVUSD candidates, only three came to the forum. Geri Simmons and Ed Tzimbal were absent, as was incumbent Doug Keegan.

For the Watsonville City Council, Manuel Bersámin addressed the audience, as did Luis Alejo, who is running for District 2. Alejo’s opponent, Joe Ortiz, was not at the forum.

Gabriel Gonzalez, who is running against Bersámin, did not show up, nor did any candidate for District 6.

Six candidates from the Santa Cruz City Council also spoke. These were Ryan Coonerty, Tony Madrigal, Don Lane, Catherine Beiers, David Terrazas and Tim Fitzmaurice.
